What is the future of set top box integrated TV sets?

Set-top boxes won't practically be obsolete as long as technology keeps changing.

TVs are fundamentally about glass and light, the electronics that goes in the back, people upgrade a TV when it fails, when they want something bigger or when it doesn't deliver what they want. But remember that picture technology doesn't change as rapidly as delivery technologies, so the processing/decoding package in a TV is more likely to become redundant before the display itself. I treat my TV as a display, it has never been tuned in because the STB does more than my TV can do and I can replace it every few years without guilt over the cost.

There are already lots of "Smart TVs" which are becoming obsolete because the manufacturer doesn't want to upgrade the software, remember that TV manufacturers don't sell upgrades so software maintenance is a drain on the business. So one valid way is to change set top box integrated TV sets

With new Over the Top platform launching about daily and cable card dead, I don't see a clear market leader for Consumer TV manufactures to rally around, to the exclusion of others, nor do I see the OTP video providers working to move to a unified platform.

Maybe in 5-10 years the market of Set-top boxes will have cleared itself up and found some standards, but for now trying to replicate and play nice all those services adds a lot of complexity to a commodity device in a hyper-competitive market. Why would Sony or Vizio or Panasonic want to add extra expense and hardware to their devices unless it was clearly and widely supported?
